With the release of The 40-Year-Old Virgin in 2005, a new genre of comedy film was born which could loosely be called the Judd Apatow style (named for its producer, Judd Apatow). This style of comedy is usually R-rated, containing humor that is typically classified as "gross-out humor," but usually with a soft, romantic ending. Films containing these attributes have usually achieved critical and commercial success, and are usually more respected than more juvenile films like American Pie or Road Trip. Other examples of this genre are Knocked Up, Superbad, and Wedding Crashers (in which Apatow had no involvement).

Grilled is a comedy film made in 2006 and featured Kevin James and Ray Romano. It was released on July 11, 2006. The film was originally named as “Men Don’t Quit “and was set for a worldwide release in the year 2005. Due to poor test screening it was pushed back to video under a new name “Grilled“.

It was not uncommon for the early romantic comedy film to ... be a screwball comedy film. This form of comedy film was particularly popular during the 1930s and 1940s. There is no consensus definition of this film style, and it is often loosely applied to slapstick or romantic comedy films. Typically it can include a romantic element, an interplay between people of different economic strata, quick and witty repartee, some form of role reversal, and a happy ending. Some examples of the screwball comedy are: It Happened One Night (1934), Bringing Up Baby (1938), Philadelphia Story (1940), His Girl Friday (1940), and more recently What's Up, Doc? (1972).

Peter Stormare, who plays a villain in the upcoming Jackie Chan supernatural comedy film The Tuxedo, told SCI FI Wire that his bad guy is brainier than some of his other villainous roles. "He's a scientist, the bad guy's sort of sidekick," Stormare said. "It's a funny, mad scientist. He's going to take over the world."
